"What is your name?"
"James Tiberius Kirk."
(cringe)
And why does Spock get mad? Or is it only his human half that gets mad?

How many dumb things can you pack into one trailer? Hmmm. Imagine how many dumb things they can squeeze into a whole movie....
Yes, let's build a starship bolt by bolt on the surface of a planet. Makes sense to me.

Have you ever tried to pound a nail in space? Makes sense to me!

J.J. Abrams has said he's a Star Wars guy -- not a Star Trek guy. So it should be no surprise, I guess, that we now have a young Annikin-age Kirk pod-racing a Corvette and a Luke-age Kirk looking wistfully for a way to go to the stars.
This is not Star Trek, it's Star Wars with Trek characters -- just as his Mission Impossible 3 was really just Alias without Jennifer Garner.
Boo.

Yeah, I don't think it's been Star Trek since TNG ended (I know you don't like TNG that much though). DS9 was more of a soap opera. Voyager was ok but didn't have much cast chemistry. I didn't watch much Enterprise.
I think there might be a void to be filled. I'm not sure what is out there to replace it.

I bought the remastered Star Trek original series season 1 DVD set a while back. I hadn't seen some of those episodes in a decade or longer. What struck me about season 1 was how very well-written the episodes were. There is some adventure in most episodes, but more than anything, it was a show about interesting concepts. They had to make do with the same budget (or less than) other hour-long dramas, so the writing was everything. Even the space battle episodes are more about Kirk and Spock outwitting their opponents, rather than out-fighting them.
I just don't see anything that remotely resembles Star Trek in the new trailer.

Yeah, I haven't watched enough of TOS.. I think CBS has them online, should go back and watch. You've seen Trekkies, right?
Posted by: Andy at November 19, 2008 4:26 PM
I have not seen Trekkies. Even though I am one, I can't stand Trek nerds. And, yes, I have a phaser in my office.

Oh, it's a classic. It's one of my favorites. We had it for a week in the movie theater where I worked summers.. I think I was one of about 5 people to watch it there.

With Sarah Palin fading away, we have nothing but Star Trek to talk about, now. Sniff.
I'll have to check out Trekkies.

So, I watched the episode with the Horta. It was pretty good, but a little long. Some shows work better at 44 minutes instead of 50 now a days.

You kids with your short attention spans.
Try "The Corbomite Maneuver." It is interesting in that it precedes the concept of the federation of planets and also has Clint Howard in it. I just watched it for the first time in probably 20+ years. CBS has it in the "remastered" set online. Have some tranya while you watch it.
"Balance of Terror" is very good, too.

I prefer the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.
I can't watch movies in one sitting any more either. Some shows are fine at an hour like The Sopranos and The Wire.. usually you don't want it to stop. But that particular episode could easily be 44 minutes.

I'm going to have nightmares about Clint Howard now.

The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is the very best drink in existence, of course. We tried to recreate that in college and I only have a vague, fuzzy memory of a stomach ache. And that leads me to a complaint about the next generation: synthohol. What a dumb concept. I liked that there is real alcohol in the original series and that there is at least one case (that I remember, anyway) of actual drunkeness. If you take away too many human vices, humans stop being human.
