I like the new "Genius" playlist function on iTunes (although I am still confused why they use the term "Genius" when it has another meaning with Apple... are they running out of words?).
How about this for an idea. For maybe, say, $9.99 a month, when you make a Genius playlist it would insert one song from the iTunes store that you don't own. You could listen to the song once (not burn it to CD) and that's it. But you get to listen to a new song in every Genius list. You'd have to buy it if you wanted to keep it, though. Too much like the dreaded renting music model?

I am also using Genius Playlists more than I expected to. It's like having Pandora built into iTunes. The Genius sidebar is annoying, though. I was hoping it would do more than encourage me to buy more songs.
I was just thinking about the "Genius" name, too. Surely they could have come up with something else.

It's pretty smart. I picked a song from Guitar Hero II and I ended up with about 1/2 the songs from other Guitar Hero games.

Why are you dreaming up new ways Apple can charge its customers?
Hiss.

I won't feel at home with any of the Apple products until they embrace the term "moron." If they had a playlist function called "moron," I'd actually look into it. As it is, I'm still pretty happy with my Ampex AG 440.

Well Cody the music industry can't survive on you buying me T.I. CD's alone...
I probably wouldn't pay that much... but it would be a cool feature, and probably not free.
Posted by: Andy at September 22, 2008 07:19 PM
Why would you have to pay $9.99 per month for a song that you'd have to buy after 1 listen? If they're going to give you song "previews," they'd better do it for free.
Or you could do what I do and subscribe to emusic and find tons of music you've never heard of, but end up loving for one flat fee each month. Also, no DRM and completely compatible with every mp3 player.
Posted by: Sean at September 22, 2008 08:24 PM
Do you get to keep all of the emusic?
Well, of course now you get free previews but only 30 seconds. This would be the whole song. It doesn't really make that much sense, I guess, because people would just make a Genius playlist, listen to the free one, and make another.

Ok, I found it. I hate it when sites hide their pricing plan. I had to go to another site, but I think that one is out of date, too. I guess you get a certain amount of downloads per month? Is it 30 songs for $10? That's pretty cool. I like that model.
Posted by: Andy at September 22, 2008 09:17 PM
My car has what we call a "radio" in it. I listen to pretty much the same 30 songs per month -- and it is free. Beat that.

Free? Where have I been sending my check all this time?

Wow. This conversation really took off. Your welcome.

Thank you Cody. Where do you get your music?
Posted by: Andy at September 23, 2008 01:37 PM
Let's just say I follow the Dwight Shrute methodology of giving my credit card information to foreign web sites in exchange for some o' their sweet, sweet mp3s. Sure it's risky, but I hedge the risk by repeatedly telling myself that my identity isn't worth all that much to begin with.

Oh, and U.S. copyright law enforcement is a joke!
Posted by: Cody at September 23, 2008 03:25 PM
Oh, and I don't believe U.S. copyright laws were made with me, specifically, in mind.

Is it an alien donut?

Yes, you get to keep all the songs you download from eMusic. Unlike other subscription models, you can cancel the subscription and keep the music. I recently reinstated my membership after canceling it a few months back. I was on the 75 songs for $20, but now I'm on the 50 songs for $15/month. I used all 50 in about 3 days, so I'll probably upgrade.
The files are regular MP3s with zero DRM. They've recently upgraded the site, too. You used to have to download the 30-second song previews and then open them in iTunes. Now you can preview each track on the site. The download manager application is nice, too.
It's not as all-encompassing as iTunes, but then again, I've never purchased a TV show or movie from iTunes (I have, however, rented movies via iTunes on my Apple TV).

Can we start ripping on cable TV some for Cody's sake? It wouldn't be a comment discussion without it.

I want to believe.

I want to believe there will be another X-Files movie. I need the work.

FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder must have forgotten about his hit series, Californication, as well as his sex addiction. There's work to be done on both! Tea Leoni agrees!

I believe you are thinking of David Duchovny, who plays me in the television show and also in the movies. We are not the same person. My chin is more masculine than his.

So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade — we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today.
