Been having fun with extension tubes + 50mm lens. Found this guy after crawling around the back yard (while Aimee was doing actual yard work).
And this guy has been hanging out by the back porch light (don't tell Aimee):

Very cool. Do you have to focus manually with the rings on?

Actually you focus by moving the camera closer or farther. The ring pretty much goes millimeter by millimeter at that range, so it's better just to do it by hand, which makes it tough. I think for the mantis I took about 80 shots and had 2-4 decent ones. Between the focus and the framing and the exposure (I had a regular external flash I was using too) you get a lot of bad ones. Having an f-stop of 9 or so (or more) helps with the focus. The mantis was f/16.

Might have to get me some of those.

Yeah they're fun. I'm not sure what magnification (definitely not a 5:1 like the Canon MP-E 65mm: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/mp-e-65.shtml ) but for the price, can't go too wrong.
