On the eve of opening day, too

RIP Herb Carneal, one of the voices of the Twins I grew up listening to.

There's something great about baseball on the radio, and Herb definitely will be associated with those great memories growing up.

When I was little I'd listen to Twins games on my clock radio while falling asleep. While at the cabin with family we'd tune into the game one WELY, although back then it was more static than game, especially during any of the numerous thunderstorms up there.

A couple samples:

Rod Carew steals home

Kirby steals a home run

Twins win the pennant

His style is so much better than most announcers you hear these days who interject stupid chatter or over-dramatizing events (Joe Buck comes to mind).

Herb was 83. He was scheduled to work 36 home games this year.

That sucks. This is the guy I used to listen to just to get a baseball fix as a kid. I hated the Twins so I would always cheer for the other team. I don't really like the newest guy they have on Twins Radio. He seems more about his voice than the game. Always liked Herb.

Not sure who you mean, but I like John Gordon (who has been there for a while now) but Dan Gladden just joined up. Sample of his color commentary: "And the ball... What! No! Ah! Why!!"

Yeah, it's John Gordon. I think he's an idiot. Anyone who makes it a point to have a "catch phrase" for a strikeout call isn't about being descriptive for the listener. Bert Blyleven is the man.

what's his strikeout catch phrase? he hits a home run with me. if you think catch phrases are dumb you can intentionally walk, i don't care. what a knuckleball thing to say.

Don't feel put out by what Siskow says. He rode the shortstop bus to school. Plus, he's still exhausted from that charity marathon at Adventure Land to benefit printers of the book "The Iliad". I think it was called the Inside The Park Homer Run.

And you better hope Sean doesn't get involved. His bat is corc-ed.

I'm in Minnesota right now and am going to listen to a Gordon broadcast today and report back. I can't say that report won't be really biased though. I saw a news report on Carneal last night and it further reinforced my liking for him. But they talked to John Gordon and it made me hate him even more. I hate the way he says "Morneau" (Morneeeeaaaauuu) and I hate his boring chatter about who-cares-what when the Twins are down by 6 late in the game. You've heard more Twins games than me so he may be an acquired taste. But when I've listened to him, he's screwed up the ball/strike count on multiple occasions and has said "Minnesota three, Twins nothing" heading into commercial. My distaste for him probably just stems from my distaste for the Twins, so there probably isn't any real reason for my disliking him other than just liking Herb more. Though Gordon was there when I used to listen, I always thought he seemed like a Joe Buck primadonna type. Still do. I've heard he's a stand up guy and I don't doubt that he is, he's just a good reason to watch the game on TV or listen to white noise instead.

I'm not saying he's the best ever and doesn't make mistakes, but for a Twins fan he does a good job making the game interesting and telling the story of the game.

When you're doing a show with Dan Gladden, it's IMPOSSIBLE to be a primadonna. It's Dan Gladden.
