Use your blinker!
Iowa, and specifically Des Moines, was named one of the top 10 states with the safest drivers in the U.S.
This sort of baffles me because apparently while Iowans don't get into as many accidents, most drivers I run across have terrible driving habits:
I would estimate only about 25%-50% at best ever use their blinker
And no more than 60% ever turn on their lights when it's raining
Rolling stops, changing lanes in the middle of an intersection, and going too fast or too slow is very common as well.
My question to readers of this website who live in other states: do you consider the drivers where you are "good" drivers? Are bad drivers pretty much everywhere? The thing that annoys my the most is not using a turn signal... how does your city compare in your experience?

No Man's Land
I just wanted to bring this to the attention of the small number of people who check out this site. So, I just watched the movie No Man's Land, a relatively little-known film about the Bosnian-Serbian war. It's a pretty serious (and tragic) movie about three soldiers trapped between enemy lines. One is actually lying on a land mine and can't move. The other two, being from opposite sides of the war, just pretty much want to kill each other. A real popcorn movie, huh? Well, you would definitely think so from the trailer:
You can find the trailer here.
Looks really fun, huh? Yeah. Not at all like the movie. But war has to look fun for the American audiences. It's not that great a movie, but at least they don't have to resort to totally distorting the film in the trailer... just listen to the trailer guy's narration and music and tell me what you think.

Lost time
I've been "I don't even want to stand up" sick for the past week, so I haven't gotten around to posting much. Here are a few links to waste some time with.
Look Around You (video)- A British show that spoofs 70's and 80's educational films. "The brain is basically a wrinkled bag of skin filled with warm water, veins, and thought muscles. Think of it as a kind of modified heart, only with a mind or brain." (Thanks, RP!)
What's the most offensive show on television? How about MTV's Super Sweet Sixteen? (via Kottke)
Very interesting thread on Metafilter - Life altering experiences (it's long!).
Fred Rogers addressing the Senate in 1969 (video). (via Waxy)
If you want to hurt your brain with a challenging puzzle, check this out. (Hapland 2 is equally frustrating/awesome!)

It's Monday!
BBC mistakes a cab driver for a technology website editor. (video) His face at the beginning is priceless. From the site: Reportedly, they called out "Guy Kewney", the taxi driver responded "Hello". He was then whisked up, sat down, and set for an interview live on air with the BBC, responding to questions about the Apple vs Apple lawsuit.
Edit: I guess he wasn't a cabbie but some random guy applying for an IT job at the BBC. Link.
Al Gore's "presidential" delivery on SNL. (video) This made me laugh. And cry.
Gizmodo rips off an image from Westy. (not a video) That's not cool. The Internet isn't about copyright infringement. Oh, wait.
Edit: Oh, boy, full of mistakes today. If you click on the full Gizmodo story, they do give Westy credit. Good for them.

Play ball!
I went to a couple baseball games in the past week. The first was a Royals game with BK, Woodsie and Cody in KC. We were fully expecting the Royals to lose, but they somehow pulled out a win.
Woodsie got us free tickets (he said he "knows a guy," but with Woodsie, that probably means he "stole them from a family of four"). They were nice seats about 30 rows up behind home plate.
A good time was had by all. BK wasn't even ejected from the game.
And last night,
Aimee and I (and Aimee's friend from work) went to an iCubs game on a chilly Friday night.
The main reason we went was because Kerry Wood was pitching.
We saw him play last year when he was coming back from an injury, too. Last time he hit a triple, but he only hit a single this time around.
There were a lot of people at the game despite the cold weather. I'm not sure if they hit a record number for attendance, but it was fun seeing the place almost full.
Bigger versions of these can be found on my Flickr page.

News that makes you say "woot!"
The Original Star Wars trilogy is to released on DVD - Sept. 21 through Dec 31 only. Maybe Lucas had a change of heart now that he's an action figure.
The Nintendo DS Lite is coming June 11 for $129. A DS with a web browser (with its built-in wireless internet!) would be a lot of fun.
Most public schools will be removing pop machines. Another delayed Super Size Me effect?
ABC adds streaming content of their shows on the web (with limited commercials). Now if only I watched anything on ABC.
And other news that makes you say "huh"?
Bill Gates wishes he wasn't the richest man in the world. Umm... I'll help you out in that area if you want.
And fine Illinois journalism covering the "Day Without Immigrants." Ouch.
